Experiences / Treasure Hunt
A self-guided adventure through the historic streets of Sint Maarten
Calico Jack Rackham was one of the Caribbean's most notorious pirates — known for his Jolly Roger flag, his bold raids across these very waters, and his complete inability to keep treasure buried for long. Somewhere in Philipsburg, a piece of his legend remains. Your job is to find it.
The treasure hunt takes you through the historic streets of Philipsburg, Sint Maarten's Dutch-side capital. You'll follow a series of clues across heritage sites, colonial landmarks, and hidden corners of the old town that most visitors walk right past. Each clue leads you deeper into the island's story — and closer to the final prize.
The route takes you through the heart of Philipsburg — past the old courthouse, along the waterfront, through the narrow streets that haven't changed much since the 18th century. Along the way you'll learn about the island's Dutch and French colonial history, its salt trade, the pirates who used it as a base, and the characters who shaped what Sint Maarten became.
It's part history tour, part puzzle, part excuse to explore a part of the island most cruise passengers miss entirely.
The route is entirely on foot through central Philipsburg. Comfortable shoes recommended. The route is suitable for all fitness levels — no hills or difficult terrain. Available in English, French, Dutch and Spanish. Start any time between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Allow 60–90 minutes. Ends back at Rumhuys where your complimentary tasting is waiting.
